If you live in Nebraska and can no longer work due to a disability, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The application process can feel overwhelming, but knowing the steps ahead of time makes it easier to get started.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility

Before applying, make sure you meet the basic SSDI requirements:

  • You have a disability that prevents substantial work for at least 12 months or is expected to result in death.
  • You have enough work credits based on your past employment. Most applicants need at least 20 credits earned in the 10 years before becoming disabled.

Step 2: Gather the Necessary Information

Having the right documents ready will make your application smoother. In Nebraska, you’ll need:

  • Medical records from doctors, clinics, and hospitals
  • Work history for the past 15 years
  • Recent tax forms or W-2s
  • Medications list and treating physician details
  • Personal identification (Social Security number, birth certificate, etc.)

Step 3: Choose How to Apply

You can start your SSDI application in Nebraska in three ways:

  1. Online at the Social Security Administration website.
  2. By phone at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
  3. In person at your nearest Social Security field office in Nebraska, such as those in Omaha, Lincoln, or Grand Island.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Complete the forms carefully and provide as much detail as possible. Incomplete or vague answers are a common reason for delays or denials.

Step 5: Follow Up on Your Case

After applying, the Disability Determination Services (DDS) office in Nebraska will review your case. They may:

  • Contact your doctors for more medical evidence
  • Ask you to attend a consultative exam
  • Request additional work or treatment information

Step 6: Prepare for a Possible Appeal

Most initial SSDI applications are denied, including in Nebraska. If this happens, don’t be discouraged—you have the right to appeal through:

  1. Reconsideration
  2. Hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)
  3. Appeals Council review
  4. Federal court review (if needed)
