If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Nebraska, you may wonder if you can also qualify for other types of benefits. The good news is that SSDI can often be combined with additional programs, but the rules vary depending on the benefit.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Types of Benefits You Can Combine With SSDI in Nebraska

1. Medicare and Medicaid

  • After 24 months on SSDI, you automatically qualify for Medicare.
  • Some SSDI recipients in Nebraska may also qualify for Medicaid, especially if they have limited income or are enrolled in waiver programs.

2. Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

  • If your SSDI benefit is low and you have limited resources, you may also qualify for SSI.
  • This is called a concurrent claim. SSI can help cover basic living costs that SSDI alone may not fully support.

3. Nebraska State Assistance Programs

  • Nebraska offers state aid programs that can work alongside SSDI, including:
  • SNAP (food stamps)
  • Energy assistance
  • Housing assistance
  • These programs are income-based and may still be available even if you receive SSDI.

4. Workers’ Compensation or Private Disability Insurance

  • If you also receive workers’ compensation or private disability insurance, your SSDI benefits may be reduced to avoid “double-dipping.”
  • SSA uses an offset rule, which means your total combined benefits can’t exceed 80% of your previous average earnings.

What You Cannot Combine With SSDI
  • Unemployment benefits generally conflict with SSDI because unemployment requires you to state you are able to work, while SSDI requires you to be unable to work full-time.
  • Applying for both may cause your SSDI claim to be denied or reviewed.
